"It's always special to me to get to hear y'all and listen to those wonderful songs of yesteryear echoing against the buildings once again. It takes me back in time to something beautiful!"

"Thank you so much for being a part of our 33rd Annual Rendezvous fundraiser. It was a wonderful evening and we have had nothing but great remarks about your music. Our guests enjoyed dancing and we were happy to see many of them continued to linger following the main event.  Your selections were fantastic, and it was great working with both of you."

Penny B. Oregon Garden Resort, Fireside Lounge
"Another enjoyable evening listening to Alan and Lou, Next of Kin, at the Oregon Gardens Fireside Lounge. Exceptional performance. Their music selection reminds us of songs we listened to from years past and their tidbits of who wrote and sang them gave background of the song’s popularity. The interjection of humor into the evening caused good laughter of the audience. Thanks, you two for another time for Norm and I to have a great evening listening to many of our favorite songs. Looking forward to next month. Same place same time! Penny"
Lynne Rice Oregon Garden Resort Fireside Lounge
"Next of Kin is an upbeat, back home country band. The two of them together, Alan and Lou, blend wonderfully together. They have a wide variety of music and are always very entertaining. They also get very involved with the crowd. They bring back a lot of the old country tunes that time has forgotten and their expertise on their instruments shows the years of experience they have in the music industry. They get involved with the crowd when they are on the stage, and when they are on their break, they mingle thru and visit with the people who have come to enjoy their music. Alan and Lou are very good at making an enjoyable, relaxing, easy listening, comical at times, wonderful night of entertainment. The Oregon Garden Fireside Lounge has enjoyed their music for six years this coming August. In my opinion, you can't go wrong with Next of Kin!!"
Cindy S. Oregon Garden Resort Fireside Lounge
"We went to Oregon Garden last night and watched Next of Kin. We were so wowed! They were amazing. Loved the “old” country. If you haven’t seen them, you are missing out. Both Lou and Alan were so nice and personable."
Shari M. Spectator, Fan

"So enjoyed meeting you guys at the Gardens! Such a great show, we thoroughly enjoyed the evening hanging out and listening to you. You guys' not only sound wonderful, but loved the joking and stories in between. I look forward to seeing you again. :)"

Marti E Vancouver Pointe

"'Next of Kin' gave a great performance yesterday. You sounded great and dressed well for the occasion, too! I've been receiving a lot of favorable feedback from residents, and it would be great to have you return for another big event. I'll keep Next of Kin in mind as we look at fall and winter event scheduling."

Donna B. Marion County Fair

"They should be in Nashville making recordings...saw today at the fair... beautiful/awesome! Wish I had some recordings!"

Stephen S. Spectator, Fan

"Alan and Lou have an ease, an unforced, authentic ease with their music and with their audience. Accomplished musicians and singers that leave you with the impression that they could hold their own in other genres, but have chosen their niche like people choose a familiar camping spot, or a favorite couch next to the fire. And the sheer smooth talent of Lou's vocals add the undeniable finishing touch to the draw of this wonderful Northwest duo."

Jan H. Spectator, Fan

"For my Mom's 80th open house birthday party I researched groups that were kind and patient toward elder folks & little ones, had clear heartfelt singing voices, were interactive with their audience, were open to singing song choices specifically of my Mom's liking and who were approachable. I went to observe them at one of their gig's...Next of Kin had it all!  They were fantastic! I hired them on the spot!  At the 80th birthday party many guest stayed well past the buffet/dessert time because they said Next of Kin was so beautiful and mesmerizing to listen too.  People danced!  My guests and caterer asked and received Next of Kin's contact information. Next of Kin were on time and the sound system and clarity of their voices was great!  Next time I have a party they are the one's I'll call!  I highly recommend them!  Thank you Next of Kin for the special feeling you added to this happy occasion for my Mom!  Sincerely, Jan H."

"Their sound is perfect, as far as I am concerned. Lou's voice sounds like Anne Murray's, if that's possible. Alan is great on the bass violin. I can't say enough good things about them. I've checked out their website and will be at their July 4 performance. I've never liked or followed a band on Facebook before, let alone reviewed one, but I've made a big, big exception in this case! You've gotta hear this band, which definitely deserves greater exposure."

Jessica J. Life Enrichment Director, The Springs Living

"It was terrific having you perform for our community, and I had a ton of positive feedback from the audience as well as the staff. The residents also mentioned that your performance was very engaging and they can't wait to have you back!"

Penny B. Spectator, Fan

"We have heard Next of Kin a number of times and enjoy their choice of music. Easy to listen to and also dance to. We have enjoyed songs that take us back to our more youthful days, some fun sing-a-longs, and more modern selections, too. We always come away fully entertained. Looking forward to a full weekend of listening pleasure as we are going to see them at Chinook Winds to get our music fix!"

The ALS Association Oregon & SW Washington Chapter Ride to Defeat ALS Benefit

"Next of Kin was truly a remarkable band to work with and added to the overall success of our event, Ride to Defeat ALS, benefitting The ALS Association Oregon and SW Washington Chapter! We heard such positive feedback from multiple participants throughout the day that enjoyed Next of Kin, and complimented their professionalism, playlist, and overall quality. We plan on using Next of Kin again and would highly recommend them for any family friendly event."

Ashley R., Community Relations Director Pacifica Senior Living McMinnville
Speaking of the Next of Kin duo show: "I cannot thank you enough for coming to perform for our elders last night. Everyone is still talking about the great time we had last night! Even with our elders who have Alzheimer's and Dementia, they still can enjoy life to the fullest, and having great music to sing and dance to, that makes it all the better! We will definitely have you back, and I will recommend you to anyone who needs music played! Let's keep in touch, and I would love to have you come play again soon!"

About Us

Next of Kin is a musical duo with members Alan Mickelson and Lou Mickelson, Alan’s daughter-in-law. Alan and Lou have been playing in various bands since the 60’s and 80’s, respectively, but have been playing as Next of Kin since July of 2014.

 Meet the Band Members

Lou Mickelson

Vocals, Guitar, and Mandolin

Lou's day job is that of Department Manager Systems and Inventory Control with a major drug supply chain. Lou connected with music at a very young age, listening to her family's record collection through headphones while lying on the living room floor. She found her voice publicly in her early teens when she sang All I Have to Do is Dream at the local pizza parlor open mic night, singing in a small vocal group at church camp, and later the church choir. Taking an interest in her dad's beat up guitar, she began playing in high school, taking a lesson or two from her pastor. While attending L.A. Baptist College, she played with two different bands, Heavenbound and Two of a Kind. She is married to Alan's son, Marc and the couple have two daughters, a son, three dogs, and many fish. They reside in Silverton, OR.

Alan Mickelson

Vocals and bass

Alan has lived in the Silverton, Oregon community for 32+ years. He completed nine years as a board member, including one year as Vice President, and an unprecedented six years as President of the Silverton Senior Center. He has an extensive business background as a General/Sales Manager and business owner/manager. Additionally, he has a political background as a former elected City Councilman, then elected Mayor of the City of Tigard, Oregon. He has been a professional musician and entertainer for many years and began his music career in high school playing guitar with several buddies in a band they labeled, "The Kopy Kats." This current band, “Next of Kin” he says is "keeping me going!" With his wife Pat, they have one son, one daughter-in-law, two daughters, three grandchildren, three cats, and several fish. "Yep, life’s been good!"
