WHO WE ARE AND WHAT WE DO!

Next of Kin, Alan and Lou Mickelson (Father and Daughter-in-law duo who truly are “next of kin”), has performed at many community festivals and fund-raising events, as well as clubs, county fairs, retirement facilities, and even private home parties. We present family-friendly, acoustic, toe-tapping arrangements of classic Country and Western tunes along with many other classic favorites from the ’20’s to today. With songs from artists like The Hag, Hank Williams Sr, Johnny Cash, Don Gibson, Waylon & Willie, Linda Ronstadt, Emmylou Harris, and Patsy Cline just to name a few, this show is a “Feel Good” show that will bring smiles and enjoyment to the young and young at heart. Your guests will leave feeling great about the experience!

To offer variety to the set list and get that fuller sound and sweet harmonies the band loves and our audiences expect, Next of Kin may feature a local artist as a Special Guest for some of our shows. We’ve got some very talented musicians lined up to lend a hand! Check out “About Us” to see our special guest profiles.

Call or message Alan today at 503.931.1460 to schedule your event. Check out what some of our fans and venues have said about our shows.

Speaking of the Next of Kin duo show:

"I cannot thank you enough for coming to perform for our elders last night. Everyone is still talking about the great time we had last night! Even with our elders who have Alzheimer's and Dementia, they still can enjoy life to the fullest, and having great music to sing and dance to, that makes it all the better! We will definitely have you back, and I will recommend you to anyone who needs music played! Let's keep in touch, and I would love to have you come play again soon!"

Parkland Village

"Parkland Village Retirement would like to give a HUGE thank you to “Next of Kin.” I had them perform for our Western Theme Father’s Day BBQ and they were AMAZING!!! They nail the Country Classics and their talent is outstanding. This was the first time I have had them play for us at Parkland Village and our residents were going up to them afterwards praising them and asking them to come back again. I have had “Next of Kin” perform in the past for some of my events outside of Parkland Village and I would highly recommend them for any event. We will be having them back again soon!"

Shauna T., Activity Director

About Us

Next of Kin is a musical duo with members Alan Mickelson and Lou Mickelson, Alan’s daughter-in-law. Alan and Lou have been playing in various bands since the 60’s and 80’s, respectively, but have been playing as Next of Kin since July of 2014.

Meet the Band Members & Special Guest Players

Lou Mickelson

Vocals, Guitar, and Mandolin

Lou is an Operations Analyst with a major drug company and is an active worship band and praise team member. Lou connected with music at a very young age, listening to her family's record collection through headphones while lying on the living room floor. She found her voice publically in her early teens when she sang All I Have to Do is Dream at the local pizza parlor open mic night, singing in a small vocal group at church camp, and later the church choir. Taking an interest in her dad's beat up guitar, she began playing in high school, taking a lesson or two from her pastor. While attending L.A. Baptist College, she played with two different bands, Heavenbound and Two of a Kind. Lou graduated with a B.S. in Management and Communication from Western Baptist College in Salem, OR in 2000. She is married to Alan's son, Marc and the couple have two daughters, a son, two dogs, and five fish. They reside in Silverton, OR.

Alan Mickelson

Vocals, and it is all about that beautiful Hofner bass

Alan has lived in the Silverton, Oregon community for 27+ years and is completing his seventh year as a board member, one year as Vice President, and an unprecedented fifth year as President of the Silverton Senior Center.  He has an extensive business background as a General/Sales Manager and business owner/manager.  Additionally, he has a political background as a former elected City Councilman and elected Mayor of the City of Tigard, Oregon. He has been a professional musician and entertainer for many years and began his music career in high school playing guitar with several buddies in a band they labeled, "The Kopy Kats." This current band, “Next of Kin” he says is "keeping me young!" With his wife Pat of 54 years, they have one son, one daughter-in-law, two daughters, three grandchildren, one dog, one cat, and three fish.  "Yep, life’s been good!"

Trent Baarspul, Special Guest

Vocals, Guitar, Piano, and Mandolin

Trent comes to us from Deer Island, Oregon and enjoys life as a full time musician, but prior to becoming so dang popular :), he owned and operated a music school. He plays piano, guitar, mandolin, ukulele, and bass. Trent has over a decade of teaching and performance experience under his belt. He also recorded a jazz album of all original compositions titled, "Awakenings" and hosted release parties in August 2016 from Michigan to Minnesota!

“Banjo Bill” Geibel, Special Guest

Vocals, Banjo, and Guitar

Bill is a retired highway engineer who lives in Silverton, OR. He is active in many local music jams in the area and hosts the Sunday night bluegrass jam at the Wooden Nickel in Sublimity, OR. While primarily a banjoist he also plays rhythm guitar, a little upright bass, and the piano. Other hobbies include hiking and photography. Bill brings a little twang to the show that we just can't get anywhere else!

Videos

Hey everyone! Here are a couple of videos for you. One is a sample of our Duo show where we perform our cover of Nancy Sinatra's famed, "These Boots are Made for Walkin'." The other is a sample of one of our Trio shows, featuring Trent Baarspul on slide guitar. This is one of our favorite Patsy Cline tunes, "Walkin' After Midnight."
